We are a fretful people. Even if you don’t want to admit it, no matter what country, culture or social strata you belong to, worry, anxiety and general fretfulness are almost constant companion’s of every single one of us at one time or another.

We fret over everything. Sometimes it’s about something that’s happening in the here and now, and sometimes it’s over something that hasn’t even happened yet, and probably won’t happen at all.

Think about the thoughts that come to your mind most frequently, you know the ones, you just can’t seem to let go of them no matter what. Even when you try really hard to just leave them be,  you can’t help but go back to them and play with them in the corners of your mind, turning them over and over, then this way and that.

If you were around during the craze of the Rubiks Cube, then you have a pretty firm picture of what I’m talking about. That little puzzle cube drove a whole generation nuts trying to figure it out. We just couldn’t put it down even if we never figured out how to solve the puzzle.

I never was able to figure out how to get all the sides the same color, I don’t think I had the patience at the time, and honestly, I don’t think I’d have the patience to figure out how to solve it now. Although back then, I did briefly consider trying to actually scrape off the little colored squares from their original locations in order to move them and get the sides all the same color. But,  that was way too much like cheating for my taste and even though the thought crossed my mind, it wasn’t anything I ever indulged in.

Many times our problems, our concerns and even our daily lives seem like an unsolved Rubiks Cube puzzle don’t they? Because of this, we fret over them and the way to solve them, instead of stepping back, taking a deep breath and talking to God about it.

I would guess that more than half the time we’re emotionally hyperventilating over it all and don’t even realize we’re in that state. Why? I would imagine, it’s because that state of being has become so commonplace for us that it’s our normal, which is where peace steps in.

Peace can mean a lot of different things to a lot of different people, but some of the definitions from the Oxford Dictionary include, “mental calm, serenity, harmony” among others. These aspects of peace don’t come to mind as pictures of what our minds actually look like on a daily basis. Yet, it’s peace that God calls us to in the middle of our fretfulness and our problems that either don’t have solutions or have solutions we don’t like.

He says that He will give us the peace that surpasses understanding, and quite frankly when we’re in the middle of the fretfulness of our own thoughts that is exactly what peace is, far beyond our understanding, which is why it can be so shocking when He quiets our minds and gives it to us.

True peace comes only from God, He is the only one that can quiet our hearts and our minds, but we must learn to trust and rest in Him and the reality that His will and His plan is much greater than our own. Part of the process is letting go of the Rubiks Cube in our minds, giving it to Him and letting Him do what he will with it.

“Turn your burdens over to the LORD, and he will take care of you. He will never let the righteous person stumble.”

Psalm 55:22
